Yin vs Yang
Yin yoga and Vinyasa flow are two complementary yoga styles that help to balance the yin and the yang of our lives.
YIN
Yin yoga is a passive, slow-moving and grounding practice with a focus on increasing flexibility, deep breathing and meditation. Poses are typically held for around 2-5 minutes and props such as bolsters and blocks are often used to increase comfort and relaxation.
You may find it to be less physically demanding than other styles of yoga, but instead notice the challenge of sitting with your internal dialogue, which is where your deep breathing and meditation practices will come in handy.
In comparison to the more ‘yang’ style of yoga seen in vinyasa or hatha the additional hold time of yin poses allows not only the lengthening through muscle fibres but also enables you to deepen the flexibility and elasticity of connective tissue such as tendons, ligaments and fascia.
VINYASA
Vinyasa yoga is an active, dynamic and energising practice and includes sun salutations as well as balancing, standing and sitting postures. Each pose flows to the next with either the inhale or exhale of the breath.
It helps you build strength, balance and flexibility and by flowing with the breath can be considered a form of moving meditation.
